Education
NBHA has produced a number of publications which include six titles under the Shaping The Future project and 2 books; the first book was developed with the local community (Sharing The Past) and the second with University of Northampton Black History students (Black British History: Selected Studies).
As part of the Shaping the Future project NBHA has developed educational resource material linked to the national curriculum enabling the teaching of Black British History in the classroom. Five titles have been produced that can be used by teachers in primary and secondary schools as they include Black British History in children’s learning, providing a gateway of resources, allowing teachers to develop their own activities in relation to the national curriculum at a range of levels. The activities in each pack use a selection of original document sources and photographs and can be used to develop and strengthen historical enquiry skills.

Walter Tull: Sport, War and Challenging Adversity - Key Stage 1
Walter played football for Spurs and Northampton and the first black officer in World War I. The Key Stage 1 resource has History as its lead subject, supporting and developing work in literacy, drama, citizenship, geography, PSHE and art.
His story is appropriate for children and young people across KS1, KS2/3 and KS3 and we have produced packs aimed at each of these key stages.

Representations of Empire
Representations of Empire Key Stage 2 and 3

A teaching pack by Northamptonshire Black History Association, Revised July 2011.
The central focus of this pack is to look at Representations of Empire through museum resources - especially artefacts. It is envisaged that it could contribute to a more broadly based study of Empire at either Key Stage 2 (related to the Victorian period) or as a more broadly based theme at Key Stage 3. Object handling boxes that accompany this pack are available for loan from Northampton Museum.

This pack enables children at Key Stage 2 or 3 to use their observation and questioning skills to build up their knowledge and understanding of objects brought to Britain from different parts of the world. Pictures and prompt cards are built around questions such as:

· Were necklaces just about looking pretty?
· Can objects bring the Gods to Earth?
· Trading and exchanging: What do objects tell?
​
Other activities in the pack explore links with other parts of the world, making the most out of a museum visit and the story behind the Benin’ Bronzes’.
This provides a hook for investigating the British Empire or a global study.

These mini-teaching packs are intended to provide materials for one or two lessons either as a lead into or as part of a wider general topic.
These relate to different periods in the past in order to promote the integration of a black dimension in both the recent and distant past as part of our multicultural society and wider world.

Northamptonshire Black History Association has undertaken two studies into the teaching of Black History.
The first 'Black Is Also British' (Siblon 2005) was undertaken to establish whenever there was a need to develop black history materials. This supported the NBHA case to the HLF for developing out five thematic packs.

Black British History: Selected Studies
This book presents a varied and fascinating collection of studies in Black British History ranging across three hundred years of Britain’s links to Africa, North America, the Caribbean and the Indian sub-continent.
The Selected Studies fill important gaps in the generally received record of British History, providing readers with an opportunity to extend their understanding of this country’s global past. The book is the product of an ongoing partnership between Northamptonshire Black History Association and the University of Northampton.
